Curcumin, the compound that gives the bright yellow pigment to turmeric, is a polyphenol with multiple beneficial properties. Most of the therapeutic qualities of turmeric are often attributed to this compound. However, the percentage amount of curcumin is very low in raw turmeric rhizomes or powder. Thus, the modern herbal medicine industry has launched liposomal turmeric curcumin supplements with adequate amounts of curcumin that can help treat several health conditions. Recent research has found that curcumin supplements can help treat fatty liver. Let’s explore how.

What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver, or hepatosteatosis, is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver. Accumulation of fat causes liver inflammation, which can lead to liver damage and scarring. If left untreated, the scarring can lead to liver failure too. Fatty liver can be of two types: Alcohol-related fatty liver disease (AFLD) and Non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Studies have shown that curcumin helps relieve the symptoms of NAFLD.

Curcumin as a Treatment For Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease:

People with NAFLD experience inflammation in the liver cells and a spike in their liver enzyme levels. Their serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels also increase. Scientists have found that curcumin, the active component in turmeric, helps soothe hepatic inflammation associated with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

A 2021 study considered 64 people with NALFD and divided them into two groups. While one of the groups received 2 grams of turmeric for 8 weeks, the other group received a placebo for the same duration. The study reported that there has been a significant decline in the serum levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the participants who received turmeric. The liver enzymes also dropped significantly in the turmeric-receiving group.

However, further research is required to gain more insight into the therapeutic properties of turmeric for fatty liver. We should also remember that liposomal turmeric curcumin supplements are not approved by FDA. If you wish to include these supplements in your health regime, make sure you consult your physician.

The Bottom Line:

Fatty Liver can cause several complications in the long run if left untreated. Nowadays, more and more people are adopting natural health supplements to treat fatty liver and curcumin supplements are one of them.
